Week 4 Blog

 Part 1:

  1. I asked Magic School AI to create a lesson for writing a narrative essay based on the mentor text, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I love how it provided an opportunity for an opener and suggestions to help students get their creativity flowing. I had not thought about creating character mapping or a digital storyboard. I feel that these will help my students gain more interest and invest more in the assignment. The assignment is aligned with the exact context that I desire. It was spot on and carefully worded the expectations well.

  2. An improvement that I would suggest is that, because of the length of the assignment, I wish Magic School AI had broken the skills up into days or a total time to complete all the steps of the lesson. I believe that I would also add a ChatGPT element to the assignment to put their character descriptions into the program for the students to see what their character may or may not look like.

  3. The assignment that Magic School AI provided was a much more rigorous lesson plan than I had anticipated. I was pleasantly surprised. Magic School AI seamlessly blended the Oklahoma State Standards of 11.3.W.1 and ISTE Standards of 1.4.b and 1.6.c. It laid out the standards in the form of questions for students to answer during the independent practices. The ISTE standards were met in guided practice with a digital storyboard and digital character mapping, a shared Google Doc throughout the lesson, text-to-speech for differentiation, in the closing, chats in Padlet, and the extension of allowing students to record.

  4. The lesson plan that I created through Magic School AI can be found at https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/lesson-plan-generator?share=cf5902ac-64c9-444f-bda0-48f8b199e239

  5. Does the lesson reflect the readings that we have had in class in the last few weeks? In what ways? The last few weeks, we have been reading about different programs to incorporate more forms of technology into our lessons beyond the basic use of Google Classroom and slides. By incorporating ChatGPT, discussions on Padlet, and recording into the lesson, it will help students to become more motivated and invested in the project of the narrative essay, because the incorporation of the technology will help entice students to feel that it is fun and exciting, which would in turn make students more engaged and see value in the assignment.

Part 2:

  1. For my choice of element from Magic School AI, I chose the Jeopardy Review Game. It creates questions assigned with values of points, just like the real game of Jeopardy, in which students can review for a test. You can find the game that I created here at https://app.magicschool.ai/tools/jeopardy?thread=153563213

  2. I found this tool to be very useful. I asked Magic School at to use Oklahoma State Standard 11.3.R.3 about how literary elements impact theme. This game will give students a great opportunity to have fun studying for the final. It also tied into the ISTE Standard of 1.7.c of Project Teams because students could work together to compete for the answers.

  3. I would use The Jeopardy Review Game the day before The Great Gatsby final and award bonus points for the number of correct answers on the game. I believe that I would make a PowerPoint for the game to make it more colorful and eye-catching for the students. I would be able to see the effectiveness of using the review in class after the final by looking at the students’ grades.

Part 3: Reflection

  1. I believe that Magic School AI is a great resource for teachers. I would wholeheartedly share this resource with other colleagues to use. I would also like to spend time looking at the student tools to see what the platform has to offer.

  2. One thing that concerns me is with the student end. Students are already very reliant on AI to complete assignments. I want to make sure that I didn’t aid in this.

  3. Magic School AI would be able to save time for teachers. We are all capable, but there are times when we miss elements that we can add to our lessons to improve. By using Magic School AI, teachers would spend less time prepping and more time on tasks, teaching, or giving feedback to students.

  4. I think that AI can be used in schools for students if it is taught ethically. Students can use AI like Grammarly to aid in their writing skills or use Gemmi to help narrow searches. The key is teaching students that it is a tool to use, and it does not take the place of their own abilities. I saw in the reading some of the AI tools that it recommends for teachers. I would like to explore those tools, such as Turnitin, Gradescope, Diffit, and Khanmigo. I am unfamiliar with these and would like to learn more. As teachers, we can be open and transparent with our students about using AI, but we know how to ethically use it. AI is not going to go anywhere; it is best to embrace it and teach students its correct uses. The article also mentions that for teachers, AI can be a useful tool to increase rigor in the classroom.

  5. I do have some experience with using Magic School AI for generating worksheets and study guides. I have also used Gamma to create slideshows as introductions to novels we would read, and ChatGPT to create common formative assessments for grammar.

Comments

  1. I also wish it had broken it into time and gave a little more information on what was expected for each suggestion. I agree that it is a great resource for teacher and I loved several of the options like the jokes and the songs. I think this would be great introductions to class or to new learning. I have shared this resource with my colleges already with the disclaimer that it is a great tool to help you get started with a lesson or add something fun.
